Cashless everywhere: what the IRDAI rule means for your hospital bills in Kerala

Under IRDAI's cashless everywhere approach, you can now request cashless treatment even at a hospital that is not in your insurer's network, so you are no longer forced to pay first and claim later just because you chose a nearby hospital. In Kerala this is a real improvement, but it works smoothly only if you follow the intimation steps, and network hospitals still remain the easier route.

What is cashless everywhere?

Traditionally, cashless treatment, where the insurer settles the bill directly with the hospital, worked only at hospitals in your insurer's network. Anywhere else, you paid the bill yourself and claimed reimbursement afterwards. Under IRDAI's cashless everywhere framework, insurers extend cashless facility to non-network hospitals too, subject to the hospital agreeing and the usual approval of your claim. For a Kerala family taken to the nearest hospital in an emergency, this means the chance of a cashless admission even if that hospital was not on your insurer's list, instead of arranging lakhs in cash at the counter.

How do you use it in Kerala?

The steps mirror a normal cashless claim, with an intimation requirement you must respect. For a planned admission, inform your insurer in advance, often around 48 hours before, that you intend to use cashless at a particular hospital. For an emergency, intimate the insurer within the stated window, commonly 24 hours of admission. The hospital's insurance desk and the insurer then coordinate the pre-authorization. Because a non-network hospital has no standing arrangement, the process can take a little longer, so early and clear intimation is what makes it work.

  • You can seek cashless even at non-network hospitals now.
  • Planned admission: inform the insurer in advance, often about 48 hours.
  • Emergency: intimate within the stated window, commonly 24 hours.
  • Your claim still has to be valid and approved as normal.

What are the real limits to keep in mind?

Cashless everywhere is a facility, not a guarantee. The hospital has to be willing to offer cashless, your claim still has to be admissible under your policy, and your usual terms, room-rent limit, co-payment, waiting periods and exclusions, all still apply. It also does not remove the value of choosing a plan whose network already includes your preferred hospitals, since those admissions remain the smoothest. Think of it as a valuable safety net for emergencies away from your usual hospital, rather than a reason to stop caring about the network.
